Back To Basics: Deep Dive Part 9
The Forgotten Art of Communication - Why
The ability to communicate well will have a direct impact on your project, work and life’s success
My wife and I were married in the year 2000. Soon into the new millennium, we both discovered the impact of good communication in our marriage. We’ve invested a lot of time into learning the art of communication and reaped the fruits thereof.
Over the years, I’ve noticed that many of these principles I have also started applying in the workplace. The subjects of discussions are quite different between your spouse and colleagues. The principles of how to talk are the same.
In schools, back then and still today, a very few people are being taught the great value of good communication and the impact it will have on their career, marriage and life.
I call it the forgotten art because, with the arrival of technology; good communication is becoming rarer. Example, television lures many families away from the dinner table, instant messaging reduces face-to-face conversations.
Technology is not the problem – we must be intentional about good communication.
Much of a software analyst’s work involves communication. In fact, it’s a journey where you communicate with stakeholders to understand the scope, users and tech people to understand the as-is, more stakeholders to suggest the change, approve the change, communicate with tech people on how to create the change, change management people to roll out the change, and the list goes on!
Bottom line, you need to master the art of good communication.
In closing, consider the following quote from Dr John C Maxwell:
Talk to people, not above them. - John C. Maxwell
